Just Say No...to Bake Sales?

Some thoughts on reading this article in the New York Times, Bake sales fall victim to push for healthier foods. Perhaps my readers in California can give me some perspective, but I'm failing to see how an all-out ban on bake sales in schools is considered progress. Teaching about nutrition, healthy habits, exercise, etc. seem to be better solutions to developing lifelong habits. I'm all for offering alternative rewards and fundraising ideas and healthier school lunches and snacks and being creative with students, but this whole movement to make cupcakes and bake sales the enemy screams of finding a scapegoat, much like scapegoating television or video games for violence. Perhaps this is the sort of policy that results when one lives too far from Magnolia Bakery?
