Java Jo's in Jamaica Plain reminds me of the sort of laid-back, relaxed coffee house that used to exist before there was a Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts on every corner. I almost don't want to blog about them so they don't get overrun with people and spoil the atmosphere, but the baked goods, coffees, lunch sandwiches (you can get a 1/2 sandwich with chips and a pickle for under $5! who does that anymore?), and friendly service should get the recognition they are due. Check out the cafe itself:
The service is not fast or rushed because sandwiches are made fresh to order with homemade goodness. Note this if you have a train or bus to catch, Forest Hills is conveniently located across the street, and plan about 10 minutes for your food to be prepared.
I am now hopelessly addicted to their Sophisticated Sausage breakfast sandwich with sausage, egg, cheese, and roasted peppers on a wheat bagel:
As you can see, the menu items are especially creative (I need to try the You're Bacon Me Crazy sandwich):
But of course, dear readers, I wouldn't tempt you with cafe details without dishing on their baked goods! The bakery that Java Jo's orders from is amazing:
They offer a wide selection of vegan baked goods too. I tried the vegan strawberry vanilla muffin but wasn't in love; I have not sampled many vegan treats so vegans out there will have to let me know their opinion. I have sampled the brownie and it is one of the best I have ever tasted. Here is their Mississippi Mud Brownie which tastes every bit as good as it looks:
Here is their yummy Blondie:
And NOW they have catering too; just look at those photos. I'm in trouble!
