Finally I made it up to Davis Square to check out the new When Pigs Fly bakery! I'd been looking forward to checking out the new bakery after I read about it in the Globe.
They have a small space, essentially a walk-in, walk-out bakery. The bread is shipped in daily from Maine. There is a small tasting table in the corner to sample some bread along with an assortment of their own homemade jams, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar.
But the best part of visiting the store itself, as opposed to simply grabbing a loaf off the shelves from a local grocery store, is the other tasting station near the cash register. Here you can sample just about any bread they offer. Just imagine this giant cutting board overflowing with loaf after loaf of freshly baked breads just waiting for you to hunker down and choose a sample. I tried an olive loaf, oat and honey loaf (my fave), and a cranberry loaf with pistachios baked in which is not at all as gross as it sounds. All the breads tasted as good or better than if bought in a regular store. Low-carb and gluten-free bread options are also available.
Actually the loaves flew all right, right out of the store before I got there. Most loaves were already sold out by the end of the day so for best selection get there early!
